moreResolved Question: Wouldn't it be nice to have a dog in every doctor's office to screen for disease?
Mon, Jun 22 05:50 PM Dogs are being trained in Britain as potential life-savers to warn diabetic owners when their blood sugar levels fall to dangerously low levels.
Man's best friend already has been shown capable of sniffing out certain cancer cells, and dogs have long been put to work in the hunt for illegal drugs and explosives.
Their new front-line role in diabetes care follows recent evidence suggesting a dog's hyper-sensitive nose can detect tiny changes that occur when a person is about to have a hypoglycemic attack.
A survey last December by researchers at Queen's University Belfast found 65 percent of 212 people with insulin-dependent diabetes reported that when they had a hypoglycemic episode their pets had reacted by whining, barking, licking or some other display.
At the Cancer and Bio-Detection Dogs research centre in Aylesbury, southern England, animal trainers are putting that finding into practice and honing dogs' innate skills. The charity has 17 rescue dogs at various stages of training that will be paired up with diabetic owners, many of them children.
"Dogs have been trained to detect certain odours down to parts per trillion, so we are talking tiny, tiny amounts. Their world is really very different to ours," Chief Executive Claire Guest told Reuters TV.
The centre was started five years ago by orthopaedic surgeon Dr John Hunt, who wanted to investigate curious anecdotes about dogs pestering their owners repeatedly on parts of their body that were later found to be cancerous. At around the same time, the first hard evidence was being gathered by researchers down the road at Amersham Hospital that dogs could identify bladder cancer from chemicals in urine.
The move into diabetes followed the case of Paul Jackson, who told Guest and her team about his dog Tinker who warns him when his sugar levels get too low and he is in danger of collapsing."It's generally licking my face, panting beside me. It depends how far I have gone before he realises," Jackson said. Tinker has now been trained by the Aylesbury centre and is a fully qualified Diabetic Hypo-Alert dog, complete with red jacket to announce himself as a working assistance animal.
The centre is continuing work to perfect dogs' ability in spotting signs of cancer. But while dog-lover Guest says it would be nice to have a dog in every doctor's office to screen for disease, ultimately that is not practical.
Instead, she hopes the research will lead to the invention of an electronic nose that will mimic a dog's.
"At the moment electronic noses are not as advanced as the dogs', they are about 15 years behind. But the work that we are doing and what we are finding out will help scientists advance quickly so that they can use electronic noses to do the same thing," she said.Edit: Bear! You stay away from dogs today...and stairs! : )
moreResolved Question: Can anyone tell me about my weight loss?
I hadn't been losing weight all the time. My doctor said I had high blood pressure and put me on medication. Although I was told to lose weight I kept my normal diet. It wasn't until I rushed to the hospital which turned out to be a heart palpitation that I decided to change my diet. I found out I had Mitral Valve Prolapse but a mild case that may only cause palpitations from time to time. I'm on meds for that too as a result. Now tell me if this is normal. I stopped eating added salt completely. I still eat some canned foods like tuna but not in abundance so consumption stays really low. I avoid using fatty things like oil and butter and if I do use it, then not very often. No more fast foods...EVER. Sugar consumption is very low. Now i'm 6' 1" and over the past four months I've moved from 212 lbs to 186 lbs. Is this normal. I kinda liked being a bit stocky. My doctor has no contribution to the matter and never explains anything. He just says he know it's not cancer or diabetes because I don't have any signs or symptoms and the weight loss is probably because of the diet change. Although I agree with that, I still don't like the word probably. It's too uncertain. Doctors really know how to make you stressed. Any opinions?

Dizzy, stomach pain, throat spasms and contriction, swelling of subglotis?
Hi everyone. This is a mystery to me and my doctors. So anyone who wants to be a doctor, is in med school or is a doctor, post your guesses and I'll answer when I have a response.
Here are my symptoms FOR THE PAST 6 WEEKS:
1.Dizzy spells (about 2 a week) and occastional vertigo (less than 1 a week)
2. Stomach pains- wrenching, twisting; most of the day; does not change in correspondence to diet changes (I haven't had caffine, chocolate, coffee, tomatoes, any sauces in 6 weeks and am on a low-fat, low fiber, low sugar, low wheat diet because they do not know what I have)
3. Headaches- occasional migranes- I take no pain medication for it.
4. Pulsations of the knee (as in the front- like knee cap), neck (both sides) and inner elbow (not contstantly only when not moving
5. Throat Constriction and esphasgous spasms (I've had to go to the ER due to hyperventalition because of the spasms where they administer albutercol [a tranquilizer- 1/2 mg] to calm the spasms- happened twice in past 6 weeks)
6. Nausea- continuous, aggravated by certain smells (like citrus fruit, coffee and BBQ), sometimes causes lack of appitite
7. Bruising more easily and more severly
MEDICATIONS:
I've done two courses of amoxycillian (12 days each- 3 times a day)
I've tried Zantac for 17 days and it made everything more severe. Taken of zantac and told to take tums 6 times a day (2 tablets) IF IT HELPS, it doesn't so I haven't used it more than 5 days after prescribed.
Blood tests are negative for allergies (including gluten allergy), Epstien Barr (EBV), mono, strep--4 times each.
Endoscopy showed irrated stomach lining, esophagous and subglotis.
Throat is red, not sore, however feels constricted.
ENT said it is not from Ear Nose or Throat.
Pulmonologist said lung function is above normal and no allergies and no pulmonary hypertention.
GI- preformed endoscopy and ultrasound (inflammed but nothing else)
Internist- sent for metabolic tests (pancreatic enzymes are all elevated--especially amylase)
Cardiologist- heart is working perfectly, no water around heart.
I have LOW blood pressure, normal pulse, LOW cholesterol, LOW-not too low- blood sugar.
The stomach pains, which are wrenching and twisting in nature, are in the center of my torso (below my rib cage) and also to the left of the place in the center. From what the GI doctor tells me, that is either the pancreas or the stomach.
Also, I have been fatigued and over tired. I have fallen asleep while exercising and have been forced to give up exercising (its been 4 out of the 6 weeks that I haven't exercised--I usually ran 3 miles a day and worked out at the gym (weight lifiting) twice a week before). I haven't gained or lost much weight.
Also, I am a female weighing 147 (or so) at 5 feet 6 inches. I am aged between 18-25 (I rather not give my exact age, thank you for understanding).
The most powerful and annoying symptoms (also the most continuous) are the ABDOMEN PAINS, THROAT CONSTRICTION and the NAUSEA.
Thank you in advance for all your suggestions. And please don't write go to a symptom checker website. I would like to have human input. I do have the ability to check those websites; however, i chose not to because they are not the product of an expirence of an illness/symptoms or education in medicine.
Also, there is no possibility of me being pregnant. I am not married and have not participacipated in any form of sexual acts, of course kissing is excluded.
I have also had x rays of the abdomen with normal results.
I do not have cancer of the throat, tounge, esophogus, stomach, uterus, ovaries, or blood. The biopsy results turned up negative, so far. THANK GOODNESS!
I have a normal white blood cell count- so my body is not fighting an infection- at least that is what the doctor's think.
No one has displayed symptoms like mine who have spent time with me (therefore, the doctors have inferred it is not contagious).
I have not had a fever, yet, in the past 6 weeks.
I have been hospitalized for rehydration (through ringer's lactate) for 2 days and 1 night because I was dehydrated at the beggining of this (6 weeks ago) where it began with migrane, bloodshot eyes, dehydration and dizzy spells. I was admitted and watched overnight.
3 days ago - 5 days left to answer.
Additional Details
The reason anxiety is not what the doctors are looking for is because I have physical symptoms that show inflammation of different organs and tenderness when physically examed. Also, they tried antianxiety medications that didn't work.

moreVoting Question: Would this work to help with acne and acne scars? #2?
Key Ingredients:
Vitamin A is important for the prevention of night blindness and other eye problems, as well as some skin disorders, such as acne. It is also important in the formation of bones and teeth. Numerous other benefits include maintenance and repair of epithelial tissue, of which skin and mucous membranes are (1) composed, protection against infections, and antioxidant cell protection.
Vitamin B Complex: Eight different nutrients make up the Vitamin B Complex: Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Pantothenic Acid, Pyridoxine, Cyanocobalamin, Biotin, and Folic Acid. Though grouped as a family, they each perform unique and separate functions, which include enhancing the metabolic rate by breaking down fats, carbohydrates and protein for energy, and maintaining healthy nerves, skin, eyes, hair, liver, and brain function. They are important for heart health and are an effective aid in lowering cholesterol. B-complex vitamins also act as coenzymes, helping enzymes to react (2) chemically with other substances.
Vitamin C is critical for numerous metabolic functions, including tissue growth and repair, glandular functions, and healthy gums. It aids in the production of anti-stress hormones and interferon (an immune- system protein), and it can combine with toxic substances, such as certain heavy metals, and render them harmless so they can be eliminated from the body. Vitamin C works synergistically with Vitamins A and E; that is, when working together, they have a greater effect than the sum of their individual effects. Supplementation of this vitamin is critical, as the body cannot manufacture it.(3)
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin required for absorption and utilization of calcium and phosphorus. It is especially important for the growth and development of bones and teeth. It protects against muscle weakness and aids in heartbeat regulation.(4)
Lutein is an important antioxidant for eye and skin health. Research also suggests that Lutein found in blood serum may be linked with less thickening of arterial walls.(5)
Lycopene is a phytochemical found to reduce the risk of prostate and lung cancer. With correct dosages, Lycopene may also reduce the risk of digestive cancers.
Astaxanthin eases arthritis and joint pain, sore muscles, and protects against heart disease. It is a potent antioxidant derived from micro algae. Because it crosses the blood/brain barrier, it offers oxidative protection for the nervous system.
Zeaxanthin protects cells in the eyes from free radical damage, which may reduce the risk of macular degeneration.
Alpha Lipoic Acid is a powerful antioxidant that aids in protecting the liver and pancreas.(6)
Green Tea Leaf Extract is used to lower cholesterol levels, stimulate the immune system, and regulate blood sugar and insulin levels.
Amino Acid Complex important for metabolic functions, such as helping the brain receive and send messages. Facilitates the absorption and assimilation of vitamins and minerals by the body.
Herbal Energy Blend (Peppermint leaf, Rhodiola rosea root, Eleuthero): Promotes stress-relieving effects for added energy, which contribute to immune system enhancement. Also aids in digestion.
moreResolved Question: Death, did she accept it?
I asked this before, and didn't get any good answers, so I'll ask again. First let me say my mother was a cancer survivor 3 time in the past 36 years. This was the 4th. A few months ago she started having low blood sugar levels and wasn't eating. She was admitted to the hospital on a Monday night. The doctors did their tests and procedures for days. I visited every day, taking care of her. And she was doing pretty well at this time. One week later the doctors diagnosed her with cancer throughout her body. She did not cry. I really think she knew, but it's too late to ask her now.
Anyhow I stayed with her on Tuesday and she said she did not want any treatment. A DNR was in place. Then on Wednesday there was a dramatic change. Her whole body was in total shut down. She lay in bed, moaning in pain, but otherwise unresponsive. How could this happen so quickly?
I got the doctors to put her on pain meds. She was given a fentynol patch. She still seemed to be in pain. That evening she was taken to hospice. Still in pain and having a hard time breathing, she was put on morphine. (I learned the fentynol patch would take 12 hours to get in her system) Eventually the morphine worked, and she did quiet down and rested peacefully. Her blood sugar level dropped, and the death rattle started. My mother took her last breath at 1:20am. Should I have pushed the first doctors to put her on better pain meds? Should I have tried talking her into any treatment? Do you think she accepted death since this all happened so quickly, or was she just that sick? Do you think God was there to comfort her?
Serious answers only please.

The top five cancer-causing foods are:
1. Hot dogs
Because they are high in nitrates, the Cancer Prevention Coalition advises that children eat no more than 12 hot dogs a month. If you can't live without hot dogs, buy those made without sodium nitrate.
2.. Processed meats and bacon
Also high in the same sodium nitrates found in hot dogs, bacon, and other processed meats raise the risk of heart disease. The saturated fat in bacon also contributes to cancer.
3. Doughnuts
Doughnuts are cancer-causing double trouble. First, they are made with white flour, sugar, and hydrogenated oils, then fried at high temperatures. Doughnuts, says Adams , may be the worst food you can possibly eat to raise your risk of cancer.
4. French fries
Like doughnuts, French fries are made with hydrogenated oils and then fried at high temperatures. They also contain cancer- causing acryl amides which occur during the frying process. They should be called cancer fries, not French fries, said Adams .
5. Chips, crackers, and cookies
All are usually made with white flour and sugar. Even the ones whose labels claim to be free of trans-fats generally contain small amounts of trans-fats.
BRAIN DAMAGING HABITS
1. No Breakfast
People who do not take breakfast are going to have a lower blood sugar level.
This leads to an insufficient supply of nutrients to the brain causing brain degeneration.
2. Overeating
It causes hardening of the brain arteries, leading to a decrease in mental power.
3. Smoking
It causes multiple brain shrinkage and may lead to Alzheimer disease.
4. High Sugar consumption
Too much sugar will interrupt the absorption of proteins and nutrients causing malnutrition and may interfere with brain development.
5. Air Pollution
The brain is the largest oxygen consumer in our body. Inhaling polluted air decreases the supply of oxygen to the brain, bringing about a decrease in brain efficiency.
6. Sleep Deprivation
Sleep allows our brain to rest. Long term deprivation from sleep will accelerate the death of brain cells.
7. Head covered while sleeping
Sleeping with the head covered increases the concentration of carbon dioxide and decrease concentration of oxygen that may lead to brain damaging effects.
8. Working your brain during illness
Working hard or studying with sickness may lead to a decrease in effectiveness of the brain as well as damage the brain.
9. Lacking in stimulating thoughts
Thinking is the best way to train our brain, lacking in brain stimulation thoughts may cause brain shrinkage.
10. Talking Rarely
Intellectual conversations will promote the efficiency of the brain

The main causes of liver damage are:
1. Sleeping too late and waking up too late are main cause.
2. Not urinating in the morning.
3. Too much eating.
4. Skipping breakfast.
5. Consuming too much medication.
6. Consuming too much preservatives, additives, food coloring, and artificial sweetener.
7. Consuming unhealthy cooking oil. As much as possible reduce cooking oil use when frying, which includes even the best cooking oils like olive oil. Do not consume fried foods when you are tired, except if the body is very fit.
8. Consuming raw (overly done) foods also add to the burden of liver.
Veggies should be eaten raw or cooked 3-5 parts. Fried veggies should be finished in one sitting, do not store.
We should prevent this without necessarily spending more. We just have to adopt a good daily lifestyle and eating habits. Maintaining good eating habits and time condition are very important for our bodies to absorb and get rid of unnecessary chemicals according to 'schedule.'

I have gained a ton of weight due to thyroid cancer. I went to try on my dress last night and my mom said it would not zip. I had a huge panic attack and cried. Then she got my dad. He was able to zip it up after I raised my hands and they pulled the dress up higher on my torso. It's very very tight due to the boning, but I can breathe. I understand it's actually supposed to be tight, so I'm wondering if perhaps I'm just not used to this style dress yet? My wedding is Saturday, so I am out of options. I have to eat because I am very sensitive and I get low blood sugar quickly. The dress definitely felt better after I wore it for a few minutes. I wish I took my sister in law's advice and had a ribbon style corset back put in, instead of a zipper.no back fat showing! Well minimal back fat.

moreResolved Question: Night shift- Have there been any long term studies?
Ok, I work 7:40pm-5:40am (nights). After engaging into a long conversation on working the night shift, my girlfriend pulled a study about the night shift. The study involved a couple people working normal 9-5's and put them in a building with no windows and no clocks to work for 10 days. The study showed that the ones that worked the night shift developed higher blood pressure and low blood sugar. I argued that these people weren't used to that schedule and that they must be on a long term regime to show normal signs. I was wondering if any of you maybe have read any studies or have any links to studies that prove (or disprove) either of these theories? I'm thinking that if you treat the night shift identical to a day shift, consistently, for a few years, that you'll be just as healthy and have the same chances of having a heart-attack, developing cancer, etc, etc.

I. Methanol (Wood Alcohol)
-IS poisonous to man when it stands alone.
-As a constituent of other foods in nature, it is in combination with ethyl alcohol,
which counteracts/neutralizes the methanol as it is metabolized.
-There is no ethyl alcohol (EtOH) in aspartame.
-Methanol in not in "free form," unless Aspartame is heated over 80O F. (as in warehouse)
-10% of the weight of Aspartame will be absorbed into the bloodstream as methanol within hours of consumption.-Methanol metabolizes into formaldehyde and formic acid in 12-18 hours after consumption. -Formaldehyde is known to cause cancer, accumulating slowly without detection in the body. - Methanol when heated above 85O F in food, liquid or in the body (98.6O F) is quickly absorbed into the bloodstream. moreResolved Question: A question about breast cancer as pertaining to the liver?
My diabetic mother in law has metastatic mammary carcinoma. It was in 8 of 10 of the lymph nodes removed. When discovered, it had already traveled to the pelvic bone, the spine, and along the outer chest wall on her left side. It had also traveled to the liver and pancreas. She has been through 3 different rounds of chemo and has tolerated it well. In November, she found a knot where the original site was. A petscan revealed that it was cancerous and it was back along the chest wall and had grown in the liver and traveled to the lungs. The doctor started her on a new chemo(thrid kind) and she her body totally rejected it. On Christmas Day we took her to the hospital and her Albumin was very low, her White blood count was down to 1900 and she had a severe bladder infection and the lower left lobe of her lung was collapsed and her blood sugar was over 500 and they found ulcers in her stomach and upper intestine(I think this was because of the oral cancer drug) which was negative for cancer cells. The doctor gave her amino acids and admitted her where we stayed for a week. her lung function got better, but she seemed very disoriented. Now it's the end of January and after a petscan the doctor says it is spreading in the liver and lung and that there are now pockets of cancer around the liver. she then started her fourth kind of chemo something they call the red devil. She took one dose and her blood suger went to 586, and her lbilirubin started to rise, while her white blood count stayed above 13,000. At the last bloodwork, her bilirubin was at 13, it has climbed from 6 to 13 from Monday to Thursday. I need to know if a liver can possibly re-start itself after this much damage. The chemo shrunk the tumors, but without the liver functioning we know there is no hope. How high can the bilirubin go before it is fatal?

Scientific research clearly shows that diets with high fat, high sugar, highly refined diets (as promoted by media) are leading to a very high rate of disease among those living the typical Western lifestyle. This leads to diseases such as:
High Blood pressure
Heart Disease
Diabetes
Obesity
Cancers
The disease incident rates in populations eating less fat and refined carbs is absurdly low. Why isn't the media taking the charge? Why aren't people outraged? Is it a lack of information?

moreResolved Question: diabetes type 2 and fusterated with doctors?
i am having such a hard time with doctors. last feb i was sick and so i went to the doctor. thats when they told me i was type 2 diabetic. they put me on metformin and told me to change my diet and exercise more. no biggie. ever since that visit, i havent felt the same. i am sick ALL the time. i went to my doctor every couple of weeks. ive had tons of blood work done. the only thing they ever find in my blood work is a high white blood cell count that hasnt gone down. but they cant find the infection causing it. i have gone for a couple second opinions. i have gone to a couple women health doctors. i even saw a cancer doctor that tried to say i had leukemia. but all my tests came back good. one doctor after another and no one can find out why im always sick now. i keep getting every excuse for my symtoms. they say there from the diabetes.. the ONLY other medication i was even on was the depo birthconrol shot. i stopped that a year ago before the diabetes hoping to get pregnant for the first time. they say its stress.. work related.. and another one only lectured me on smoking. i understand smoking isnt good. but would smoking alone make me sick all the time.. cmon!! i had runs all the time. i felt bloated and nasty. i got horrible headaches. sick to my stomach. light headed and dizzy spells. low blood sugars every morning. i would even eat right before bed. i would wake up with 50's and 60's. i would feel really disoriented and drink orange juice or something loaded with carbs to wake up every morning. then the orange juice would bring my blood sugar up so quickly that i would get headaches. then it was an every morning ritual to take ibuprofin. i hated it. the doctor wouldnt change the meds or the doeses no matter how much i complained. i was told it will take time to get use to the meds and control the diabetes. so almost everyday it was like work bed work bed cause im always not feeling well to do anything else!!
out of fusteration, i have stopped taking all meds. for a month now. i have felt a TON better. all the stomach problems went away. i havent had any headaches. i started taking vitamins too. im not so tired anymore. i know it had to be the medication. but here is my problem now. i keep an eye on my blood sugar. but its going high now. i am trying the best i can i eat better and control it that way. but unless i eat greens 24/7 i cant. im seeing high 100's in the mornings and mid afternoons. the highest has been 180. but on the plus side, im not going low at night. when i wake up its 90's usually.
ugh!! i know i need to go back to the doctor or a doctor. but how do i get them to actually LISTEN to me. my insurance is terrible and i cant afford to keep jumping around doctor to doctor. im getting tired of them running tests i can not afford!!
has anyone else had this problem or can anyone offer any advice?

A SUDDEN TURN: Gene Upshaw was diagnosed with pancreatic
Gene Upshaw, the executive director of the National Football League Player's Association—the union for NFL players—died late Wednesday evening of pancreatic cancer while vacationing in California's Lake Tahoe. Doctors diagnosed the 63-year-old Hall of Fame offensive lineman with the disease just four days earlier.
Upshaw was a guard for the Oakland Raiders from 1967 to 1981. He played in seven Pro Bowls and three Super Bowls. He served as head of the NFL player's union for 25 years.
According to Bloomberg News, Upshaw's wife, Terri, took him to a hospital on Sunday, August 17th, because he was having trouble breathing. A biopsy revealed, much to everyone's surprise, that he had advanced pancreatic cancer.
In March, actor Patrick Swayze—star of the hit 1980s film Dirty Dancing—revealed he had been diagnosed with the illness in January. Doctors' reports indicated they had caught his cancer relatively early.
The pancreas secretes hormones and enzymes to digest our fats. One of those hormones is insulin, which prompts the body to use sugar in the blood rather than fat as energy. Its levels are low in diabetic patients, who suffer from abnormally high blood sugar.
Only one fifth of Americans diagnosed with pancreatic cancer survive for a full year, according to the American Cancer Society, and it is the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the country.
How does the disease develop without noticeable symptoms and then kill so quickly?
To find out, ScientificAmerican.com called Allyson Ocean, an oncologist at New York–Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center, who specializes in gastrointestinal cancers including pancreatic cancer. An edited transcript follows:
Why does pancreatic cancer kill so quickly?
Pancreatic cancer is typically diagnosed at a late stage because it doesn't cause symptoms until it's too late. Weight loss, abdominal pain, jaundice [a yellowing of the skin due to toxic buildup in the liver]—those are the most common symptoms. They usually start after the tumor is a significant size. By then, chances are, it has metastasized [that is, spread to other parts of the body].
Only about 10 to 15 percent of pancreatic cancers are diagnosed when they could be considered for surgery. And the prognosis is poor even in patients who do have surgery, because it comes back about 85 percent of the time. At best, 25 to 30 percent of patients are alive five years after surgery.
When doctors do pancreatic cancer surgery, they take out 95 percent of the pancreas, including the tumor, and then they leave a small remnant of the pancreas in there that serves [the insulin-producing] functions.
If a person can live without a fully functional pancreas, then what, ultimately, kills most pancreatic cancer patients?
When most patients die of pancreatic cancer, they die of liver failure from their liver being taken over by tumor.
What precludes doctors from performing surgery on late-stage patients like Upshaw?
We don't do surgery if the tumor has already spread outside the pancreas, because there's no survival benefit in removing the tumor. We also sometimes can't do surgery [when the tumor] involves the great blood vessels, the superior mesenteric vein and superior mesenteric artery. Those are the main vessels that come off of the aorta, the main artery in our body. If the tumor is wrapped around those blood vessels, then we can't take it out.
Why is this particular cancer so aggressive?
Because of the nature of the tumor cells. They escape the treatments, they hide out, and then they come back. And they grow again and they affect the liver and then they kill people.
What are the biggest risk factors for pancreatic cancer?
The biggest known risk factors are smoking and family history—it can be a hereditary disease. Then there are some other more obscure risk factors, such as defects in the anatomy of the pancreas, but that's very rare.
What factors affect how early a person gets diagnosed?
Depending on where the cancer is diagnosed in the pancreas, it can affect how soon it's diagnosed. For instance, if the cancer is in the head of the pancreas, which is close to the common bile duct, and it grows and it causes obstruction of the common bile duct, a patient can get jaundiced. And then they could [show symptoms] sooner than someone whose pancreatic cancer is in another part of the pancreas, like the tail. They would not present with jaundice, so we would not have a clue that there was necessarily anything wrong with them.
What are some of main symptoms as the cancer progresses?
Unexplained weight loss, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting. Back pain is another one, because the pancreas is very posterior in the body. Back pain is also the most common complaint that p

It's just my one lymph node that hurts. Googling is causing me to jump to conclusions about cancer, which is just terrifying. I’m constantly irritable, tired (but I have trouble sleeping when I lay down), and achy. ONE HUNDRED & ONE REASONS
TO GO VEGETARIAN
People Land Air Water Efficiency Animals Health
PEOPLE
Every year in the UK we feed our livestock enough food to feed 250,000,000 people while in the world 30,000,000 people die of starvation
20 vegetarians can live off the land required by one meat eater
Every 3 seconds a child dies of starvation somewhere in the world
If Americans reduced their meat consumption by 10% it would free 12,000,000 tons of grain - enough to feed 60,000,000 people (the population of Great Britain)
If all Americans became vegetarian, it would free enough grain to feed 600,000,000 people (the population of India)
Intensification in animal farming has displaced 1,000,000's of people from their traditional lands - eg. indigenous people in south & central america, native americans in north america & crofters in Great Britain - this is continuing today
People displaced from their lands into cities succumb to dietary deficiency, diseases, parasites & opportunistic diseases
In third world countries 1 in 10 babies die before their first birthday
The UK imports £46,000,000 worth of grain from third world countries to feed our livestock
Due to overgrazing 850,000,000 people live on land threatened by desertification & over 230,000,000 already live on land so severely desertified that they are unable to sustain their existence & face imminent starvation
1,000,000,000 people in the west gorging on meat & dairy leave 1,000,000,000 to waste away & 3,500,000,000 teeter on the brink
LAND
If they continue to clear American forests to raise cattle at the present rate, in 50 years there will be none left
1 acre yields 165 lbs of beef or 20,000 lbs of potatoes
8/10 of cultivated land in the UK is used to grow food for animals (14,732,000 hectares)
It takes 16lbs of high protein soya to produce 1 lb of beef
Since 1945 in the UK we have lost 95% of flower meadows, 50% of ancient woodlands, 40% of heathlands, 50% of wet lands & 224,000 km of hedgerows all due to animal farming
Pressure on land due to meat farming leads to soil erosion 6billion tons/year in the USA
If everyone went vegetarian upto 90% of land used for animal farming could be taken out of production & used to replant woodlands, leisure activities etc.
25% of Central america's forests have been destroyed for cattle grazing since 1960
Between 1966-1983 38% of the Amazon rain forest was destroyed for cattle grazing
90% of cattle ranches established on cleared forest land go bankrupt in less than 8 years as the land becomes barren due to nutrient loss & overgrazing
Overgrazing by cattle is destroying the land & increasing desertification, nearly 430 million acres in the USA alone has suffered a 25-50% reduction in yield since first grazed
An inch of topsoil takes 200-1000 years to develop - yet in the USA they have lost around 1/3 of their prime topsoil in 200 years (around 7 inches) due to animal farming
Land will be lost due to rises in sea level due to global warming due to animal farming
AIR
The destruction of the rainforest by cattle farmers is destroying the lungs of the planet & reducing the worlds capacity to replenish our oxygen supply
The 1,300,000,000 cattle in the world emit 60,000,000 tons of methane per year (methane is a greenhouse gas & leads to global warming)
Burning of forests, grasslands & agricultural waste associated with animal farming releases 50-100,000,000 tons of methane per year
Combining these figures, 25% of methane emissions are due to animal farming (not including the billions of sheep, pigs & poultry so the real figure is much higher)
Fertilizer used to grow crops to feed to animals releases nitrous oxide - thought to account for 6% of the greenhouse effect
Fertilizer, weedkiller & pesticides sprayed on crops enter the atmosphere creating a noxious carcinogenic cocktail
CFCs are released into the air from refrigeration units used to store decomposing flesh (meat), milk & butter - CFCs are destroy the ozone layer
Ammonia from animal urine also pollutes the atmosphere
CO2 is released by burning oil & petrol in lorries, ships, abattoirs, dairies, factories etc. associated with meat & dairy production
Emissions from large chemical plants which produce fertilizer, weedkiller & other agricultural chemicals are also poisoning our air
WATER
25 gallons of water to produce 1lb of wheat & 2500 gallons to produce 1lb of meat
UK farm animals produce 200,000,000 tonnes of slurry (liquid excrement) every year, the majority of which ends up in our rivers
Bloody waste water from abattoirs ends up in our rivers
In the USA every second humans produce 12,000 lbs of effluent while farmed animals produce 250,000 lbs
Nitrates & pesticides used on crops grown to feed livestock end up in our rivers
Meat & dairy farming uses 70 litres of water per day per animal in the UK or 159,250,000,000 litres per year in total
The water used to produce 10 lbs of steak is equivalent to the average consumption of water for an entire household for an entire year
Depletion of groundwater reserves to grow crops for animals & to supply abattoirs will lead to greater water shortages
Aquafers (stores of underground water) in the San Joaquin valley in the USA are being drained at the rate of 500,000,000,000 gallons/year to produce meat
18% of all agricultural land in the world is irrigated & as global warming increases (partly due to animal farming) it will cost $200,000,000 to keep these systems going
The water used to produce a 1000 lb beef steer is enough to float a Destroyer battleship
The liquid waste from the various parts of the meat & dairy industry flow into the rivers & from there into the seas polluting them & encouraging huge algal blooms to grow
EFFICIENCY
To produce 1calorie of energy from meat takes 60 calories of petrol, whereas growing grains & legumes to directly feed people produces 20 calories for each calorie of fuel used ( thats 1200 times more efficient)
Meat & dairy farming uses billions of gallons of oil to run tractors, fuel ships & lorries (to move animal feed & animals), pump billions of gallons of water to irrigate fields & run slaughterhouses, power refrigeration units to prevent the corpses from decomposing & to power sewage plants to clean up some of the pollution produced
Cattle convert only 6% of their energy intake (mainly grains & soya) into flesh, the remaining 94% is wasted as heat, movement (which is why they keep many animals in very close confinement), hair, bones, faeces etc
1lb of beef takes 1 gallon of petrol to produce
A family of four eating beef for a year uses enough petrol to run a car for 6 months (obviously depending on how far you drive!)
If the full ecological cost of meat was passed onto the consumer - the price would be quadrupled (at least)
The EC spends œ100,000,000's to subsidise animal production resulting in lakes of unwanted milk & mountains of unwanted meat & butter. This money could be better spent encouraging organic fruit, vegetable & grain production
In the USA in 1979 145,000,000 tons of crops were fed to cattle resulting in only 21million tons of animal bodies - the cost of the wasted crops was $20,000,000,000
Between 1950 & 1985 grain production in Europe & the USA increased massively but 2/3 was fed to animals
70% of all grain is fed to animals
Eating vast quantities of animal flesh, eggs, milk & butter is a luxury that most of the planet can not afford
ANIMALS
Fishing with drift (and other modern) nets weakens & destroys ecosystems by indiscriminately killing billions of sea creatures & disrupting the sea bed
Fishermen's nets kill 10 times as many other animals as the fish they are hoping to catch
Fish caught in nets die an agonising slow death of suffocation
Each year 15,000,000,000 land animals are slaughtered for food & an unknown but much larger number of sea creatures (including 1000's of dolphins caught accidentally)
Chickens are crammed into battery cages with upto 3 other birds, they are unable to even spread their wings & many can not even stand up
Unwanted male chicks (because they can't lay eggs) are gassed or pulped while their sisters go to the battery sheds
Chicks are debeaked without anaesthetic to prevent them injuring each other in the unnaturally confined conditions they are kept in - this is equivalent to having your fingernails pulled out without anaesthetic
Modern farming methods using growth hormones & artificial lighting mean that many chickens out grow their bones, resulting in fractured & broken legs
Sows are kept tethered in stalls 1.3 x 1 metre on concrete or slatted floors - they can not even turn around
Poultry raised for meat are kept in windowless broiler sheds, with around 20-30,000 in each shed, they live in an area of 10-20 cm square - fighting due to overcrowding is common & like battery hens they commonly suffer from supperating bed sores
Broilersheds are artificially lit 23 hours a day to produce rapid growth
Animals travel between farms & to slaughter in overcrowded transporters with no food or water - resulting in stress, injuries & deaths - legal requirements are widely ignored
95% of poultry suffer injuries before being killed & 30% suffer broken bones
Problems with stunning practices mean that many animals have their throats slit while still conscious (around 6% of cattle or 200,000 per year) & are then dipped in tanks of scalding water (to loosen feathers, bristles etc.) again while fully conscious
4000 animals die spurting their blood out every minute in a British slaughterhouse
Calf leather comes from animals killed at just 2 weeks old
Cows were fed on the ground up remains of other cows & sheep - the result is thought to be BSE (mad cow disease) in the USA cattle are fed partly on recycled plastic pellets
Cows only give milk for 10 months after they have a calf - so they are routinely artificially inseminated (ie. mechanically raped) to keep them pregnant & milking - their calves are taken away (usually at 12 hours old) for meat or export to veal crates
Cows would naturally live upto 20 years but are slaughtered after 5-7 years when their milk production begins to fall
In the UK animals are killed by first being stunned with electricity or a captive bolt gun (ie. a bolt is fired into their heads) before having their throats slit & being plunged into boiling water - all this happens on a production line with the animals being hung upside down from a moving conveyor belt - this is factory farming
"Animals are those unfortunate slaves & victims of the most brutal part of mankind" - John Stewart Mill (philosopher)
Veal calves are confined in stalls in the dark, unable to move & are fed on pigs blood , chocolate & dried milk (we are drinking the rich fresh milk of their mothers)
Cows naturally produce 5 litres of milk per day for their calves - under the intensified systems of modern farming they produce 25-40 litres per day - resulting in swollen & inflamed udders - at this rate they are soon worn out
Large areas of land are under monoculture to grow crops to feed to animals - these areas are wildlife deserts supporting fewer & fewer species.
HEALTH
Vegetarians have a 20% lower rate of mortality from all causes (ie. they live longer & don't get sick as often)
Meat is full of traces of antibiotics, hormones, toxins produced by stress & pesticide residues that become concentrated from all the crops they have eaten
Fish contain heavy metals & other pollutants -many of which originated on farms
The world health organisation recommends a diet low in saturated fat, sugar, salt & with plenty of fibre - exactly what you get on a vegan/vegetarian diet
Farmed animals contain upto 50% saturated fat in their bodies
Vegetarians have 24% reduced risk of getting heart disease & Vegans a 57% reduction (heart disease is the biggest killer in the UK accounting for 50% of deaths)
Obesity is rare in vegetarians, obesity is related to many diseases
Vegans & vegetarians have lower blood pressure & cholesterol levels - high levels are associated with heart disease, strokes & kidney failure
Vegetarians have a 50% reduced risk of dying of diabetes
Vegetarians have a 40% reduced level of cancer than the general population thought to be because they have a higher intake of vitamins A,C & E
Vegetarians have a reduced risk of developing gall & kidney stones
80% of food poisoning is due to infected meat (faeces, bacteria etc.) after all meat is decomposing flesh - most of the rest is due to salmonella in eggs
Osteoporosis due to calcium loss from bones is mainly due to the sulphur content in meat & casein protein in milk that cause calcium to be lost in the urine - the countries with the highest meat & dairy consumption are those with the highest levels of brittle bones
50% of people do not have the enzyme to digest milk properly & milk allergy is related to asthma & eczema
Meat eaters have double the rate of Alzheimers disease as Vegans & Vegetarians - some people also think that Parkinsons disease is also linked to meat eating
Egg yolk is a dense concentration of saturated fat & the white is high in albumin protein associated with leaching calcium into your urine. Butter is 80% saturated fat, cream is 40% saturated fat & cheese is 25-40% saturated fat
Meat eaters are two and a half times more likely to get bowel cancer than Vegetarians
The cling film used to wrap meat in supermarkets & butchers contains chemicals linked to falling sperm counts in men
Chinese people (living mainly on a vegetarian diet) consume 20% more calories than Americans but Americans are 20% fatter
Of 2,100,000 deaths in the USA in 1987, 1,500,000 were related to diet (ie. meat & dairy)
AND I COULD GO ON !
If you've read this far, I hope that you are beginning to see that the Meat & Dairy industry is a major contributor to misery on this planet. It is destroying the health of people in rich countries, starving those in poor countries, it is torturing & killing billions of animals every year and in the meantime it is one of the major factors in the destruction of the environment - so what does the meat & dairy industry have to say in it's defence?
Well their only real point is usually "Meat is tasty" - fair enough a lot of people enjoy the taste of meat - but there are plenty of delicious alternatives (just consider the huge range of vegetarian dishes in Indian cooking - one of the oldest & most sophisticated cuisines in the world) and if you really crave meat & dairy, nowadays there are plenty of healthy non animal alternatives - just look in the supermarket & health food shop. So I hope you will agree it's pretty pathetic to consider all the evidence & then say "well I know you're right about the environment & health & the animals - but I just love my meat"
